Berkeley County, SC (August 19, 2026) – A Berkeley County deputy was injured on Tuesday morning when a driver rear-ended the deputy’s patrol vehicle on Interstate 26 eastbound near the Volvo Car Interchange. The crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. on August 18, while the deputy was conducting traffic control near a construction zone.
The deputy was working an off-duty assignment when the collision occurred. The deputy was taken to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment, then later treated and released. A portion of Interstate 26 eastbound was closed after the crash and reopened around 7 a.m. The driver involved was described as inattentive in the sheriff’s office statement.
The crash remains under review, and additional details may be released as the investigation continues. We are glad the deputy was able to receive treatment and return home.
