Portland, OR (July 29, 2026) — A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries on Monday night, July 27, after a car ran a red light and was struck by a Portland Streetcar at Northeast Grand Avenue and Weidler Street, according to police. The impact sent the car spinning into the man, who was taken to the hospital immediately.
Officers responded to the scene just before 8:30 p.m., police said. The driver of the car had fled before officers arrived.
No other details about the driver or the vehicle were immediately available, and no arrests had been announced as of this report.

Why Streetcars Can’t Stop or Swerve Like a Car
Unlike a car, a streetcar runs on a fixed set of rails and has no ability to swerve around an obstacle in its path. If a vehicle or person ends up on the tracks, the streetcar operator’s only real option is to brake, since steering away isn’t possible the way it would be for a car changing lanes.
Stopping distance is another major factor. A loaded streetcar can weigh far more than a typical car or truck, and that extra weight means it takes considerably longer to come to a stop, even at relatively low speeds. A streetcar that appears to be moving slowly may still need much more distance to stop than drivers expect from a similarly sized vehicle.
Because of these limitations, drivers and pedestrians are generally encouraged to treat streetcar tracks with the same caution as a railroad crossing. Never assuming a streetcar can stop quickly, and never crossing tracks just because a streetcar appears far away, are both simple habits that account for how differently these vehicles behave compared to regular traffic.
