What Are the Most Common Factors in Pedestrian Crashes at Intersections?
Pedestrian crashes at intersections are among the most frequent types of pedestrian-involved collisions on record. Drivers making turns, misjudging a pedestrian’s speed, or failing to yield at crosswalks account for a large share of these crashes. Poor lighting, distractions, and unclear road markings can all increase the risk for people on foot trying to cross.
Turnpikes and high-speed commercial corridors present a heightened level of danger for pedestrians. These roads are designed primarily for vehicle flow, and pedestrians crossing them, even at marked intersections, face fast-moving traffic from multiple directions. The risk increases significantly at night, when visibility is reduced and reaction times for drivers must be near-instant.
The severity of a pedestrian’s injuries in these crashes tends to be greater than in crashes between two vehicles. A person on foot has no protective structure around them, so even a relatively low-speed contact can cause life-threatening harm. Critical outcomes are not uncommon when a pedestrian is struck on a high-traffic road.
