Las Vegas, NV (August 6, 2026) – A pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries on Tuesday night, August 4, after being struck and trapped between two vehicles on East Charleston Boulevard east of South Main Street, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The crash happened around 10:33 p.m. when a 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS, stopped behind a Chevrolet Suburban at a red light, accelerated for an unknown reason while the man was crossing outside a crosswalk between the two vehicles.

He was taken to University Medical Center’s Trauma Unit with life-threatening injuries. The Mercedes-Benz driver stayed at the scene and showed no signs of impairment. The Suburban’s driver was not hurt; one passenger claimed injury, while a second was not hurt.

LVMPD’s Collision Investigation Section continues to investigate using video, evidence, and witness statements.

We hope the pedestrian survives his injuries.

Why Might a Stopped Vehicle Suddenly Accelerate Without an Apparent Cause?

When a vehicle unexpectedly moves forward while stopped, investigators typically consider several possibilities rather than assuming any single explanation. A pedal misapplication, a mechanical issue, or momentary inattention are among the factors examined in cases like this.

Modern vehicles include safety features designed to prevent this kind of unintended movement, but they aren’t foolproof in every situation. Investigators review a vehicle’s onboard data, if available, to help determine what inputs occurred in the moments before it moved.

Because someone was positioned between two stopped vehicles at the time, even a short, low-speed movement was enough to cause serious harm. This is part of why investigators pay close attention to vehicle spacing and pedestrian positioning when reconstructing how a crash like this unfolded.
