Why Driveway Exits Can Increase the Risk of Urban Traffic Crashes
Driveways connected to busy city streets can create sudden traffic conflicts, especially during afternoon travel periods. Drivers leaving private lots or businesses often have limited visibility when trying to enter nearby roads. At the same time, through traffic may be moving steadily, leaving little time to react when another vehicle pulls out unexpectedly.
Pedestrians are also at greater risk in these areas because they may cross near intersections, sidewalks, or driveway entrances where several movements happen at once. A driver focusing on approaching traffic may not immediately notice someone walking nearby. In many urban neighborhoods, crashes involving turning vehicles and pedestrians occur within seconds after a failure to yield. Road design, visibility, speed, and traffic volume can all contribute to how severe these situations become.
