How Right-of-Way Violations Often Lead to Serious Highway Collisions
Failure-to-yield crashes are a common cause of serious roadway injuries, especially at highway intersections and crossing points. When one driver enters the path of another vehicle without enough space or time, the results can become severe within seconds. Larger vehicles, such as dump trucks, also require longer stopping distances, making it harder to avoid a collision once another vehicle enters traffic.
Crashes involving commercial or heavy-duty vehicles frequently result in more extensive damage due to differences in size and weight between the vehicles. Rural highways can add additional risks due to higher travel speeds and limited reaction time. Investigators often review roadway markings, visibility, vehicle positioning, and driver actions to better determine how these crashes unfold and why they become so serious.
