Kansas City, KS (July 23, 2026) – A pedestrian suffered serious injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday night on westbound Interstate 70 near the Turner Diagonal exit in Kansas City. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 10:25 p.m. on July 21.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2013 Honda Accord driven by a 32-year-old woman from Overland Park was traveling westbound when it collided with a stationary 2013 Honda Civic. The impact pushed the Civic into a 34-year-old Kansas City man who was standing nearby.

After the initial collision, the Accord left the roadway to the right and struck a barrier wall before coming to a stop.

The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment. Authorities said the driver of the Accord was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Our thoughts are with the injured pedestrian, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.

Why May Secondary Impact Crashes Be Especially Dangerous?

Crashes involving disabled or stationary vehicles can become especially hazardous when people are outside their vehicles. A secondary impact may push one vehicle into pedestrians or other motorists who are nearby, significantly increasing the risk of serious injuries.

Investigators typically examine vehicle damage, skid marks, debris patterns, roadway conditions, and the positions of the vehicles and pedestrians to reconstruct the sequence of events. They may also review witness statements, electronic crash data, and any available traffic camera footage.

These investigations help determine how the initial collision occurred and whether additional factors contributed to the pedestrian being struck. The findings become part of the official crash report.
