Nashville, TN (August 3, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed, and three others were hurt after a crash at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Broadway in downtown Nashville on Saturday, August 1.

Investigators said the incident happened when an 87-year-old driver from Bowling Green, Kentucky, allegedly drove a Ford Fusion through a red light and struck several people who were using the crosswalk. The victim who died was identified as 58-year-old Timothy Wedlock of Australia.

Officials said he was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remained in critical condition after undergoing surgery. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville and a 58-year-old woman from Parsons were also hospitalized with injuries that were reported as serious but not life-threatening.

Authorities said the driver, Thomas Cahill, was traveling with his 90-year-old wife and her caregiver at the time of the crash. The caregiver told investigators she was seated in the back of the vehicle and was on the phone before looking up as the pedestrians were struck. Cahill and his wife were also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said there were no signs that the driver was impaired, and video from downtown cameras reportedly showed the pedestrians had the right of way when they entered the crosswalk. Emergency units responded quickly to the scene and assisted those involved before the injured were taken for treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

Why Crosswalk Right-of-Way Matters in Busy Downtown Areas

Crosswalks are designed to provide a safer place for people to cross busy streets, especially in areas with heavy traffic and large numbers of visitors. Traffic signals help organize movement for both drivers and pedestrians, and everyone is expected to follow them carefully. When a person enters a marked crosswalk with the proper signal, drivers are generally required to stop and allow them to cross safely.

After a crash involving pedestrians, information such as traffic signal timing, roadway camera footage, witness statements, and vehicle movement is often reviewed to understand better what happened. The location of each person, weather conditions, and visibility may also help provide context. These details can help explain how the incident unfolded and may clarify the sequence of events as additional information becomes available.
