Why Pedestrian Crashes Outside Crosswalks Often Turn Fatal
Pedestrian crashes that occur outside marked crosswalks can be especially dangerous because drivers may have less time to react to someone crossing unexpectedly. At night, visibility is often reduced, making it harder to see people on or near the roadway.
Vehicle speed also plays a major role in injury severity. Even moderate speeds can cause severe or fatal trauma when a pedestrian is struck. Roadway lighting, traffic flow, and driver attention are additional factors commonly reviewed in these types of collisions. Pedestrians are encouraged to use designated crossings where available, while drivers are urged to stay alert in areas with frequent foot traffic, especially during nighttime hours.
