Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Result in Severe or Fatal Injuries
Pedestrian crashes can be especially dangerous because people on foot have no physical protection when struck by a vehicle. Even at lower speeds, the force of impact can cause severe or life-threatening injuries. The risk increases further when crashes occur on roads with higher speed limits or limited lighting.
Driver awareness and visibility are key factors in preventing pedestrian incidents. Conditions such as roadside activity, intersections, and areas without sidewalks can all increase risk. In many cases, pedestrians may be difficult to see until it is too late for a driver to react safely. Road design, traffic flow, and attention levels from both drivers and pedestrians all play a role in reducing these types of crashes.
