Kansas City, MO (July 23, 2026) – A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle during a police pursuit early on Wednesday morning at the intersection of East 18th Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. Emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after 1 a.m. on July 22.
According to the Kansas City Police Department, officers were called to assist with a fatal hit-and-run crash after a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper had been pursuing a white Chevrolet Trax that was reportedly being driven erratically.
Investigators said the pursuit was traveling east on East 18th Street toward Prospect Avenue when a pedestrian was crossing 18th Street from south to north in a marked crosswalk. The Chevrolet Trax struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk and continued eastbound without stopping.
The pursuing trooper immediately terminated the pursuit and stopped to render aid to the victim. Paramedics responded to the scene, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity.
Police said the crash marked Kansas City’s 43rd traffic fatality of 2026. Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and are working to locate and identify all factors involved in the hit-and-run.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Why Fatal Crashes During Police Pursuits Receive Extensive Investigation
When a fatal collision occurs during or near a police pursuit, investigators conduct a comprehensive review of both the crash and the events leading up to it. The investigation typically examines the actions of the fleeing driver, the pursuit itself, and the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Detectives analyze surveillance footage, patrol vehicle video, witness statements, roadway evidence, and vehicle damage to reconstruct the incident. They also review the timing and location of the pursuit, the pedestrian’s movements, and the driver’s actions before and after the impact.
Because the incident involved an alleged hit-and-run and a fatality, investigators will continue gathering evidence before determining whether additional criminal charges are warranted.
