Phoenix, AZ (September 5, 2026) – A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle early on Friday morning near 7th Ave and Indian School Rd in central Phoenix.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on September 4. Police said the man was walking in the roadway mid-block when he was hit by a vehicle.
The male driver reportedly did not realize what he had struck until he returned home and noticed damage to his vehicle. He later returned to the site and learned that the pedestrian had been struck.
The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Police said speed and impairment did not appear to be factors, and the driver was not arrested. The investigation remains ongoing.
Our condolences go to the pedestrian’s family and loved ones.
What to Know About Pedestrian Crashes
Pedestrians face a high risk of serious injury when struck by a moving vehicle because they have little physical protection. The severity of injuries can depend on vehicle speed, the point of contact, roadway conditions, and whether the pedestrian was visible to the driver.
Drivers should remain alert for people walking near or in roadways, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. Using appropriate speeds and watching carefully for pedestrians can give drivers more time to react.
Pedestrians can also reduce risk by using designated crossings when available, staying visible to approaching drivers, and avoiding roadways whenever possible. Both drivers and pedestrians share responsibility for making roads safer.
