What Makes Pedestrian Crashes on Highways Dangerous?
Pedestrians on highways face significant risks because vehicles travel at high speeds, and drivers may not expect people to be walking along the roadway. Limited visibility at night can further increase the danger.
Drivers should remain alert for people near the roadway, especially around disabled vehicles and other hazards. Motorists should slow down when approaching stopped traffic or unusual activity and maintain control of their vehicles. Pedestrians near a highway should stay as far from moving traffic as possible and wear visible clothing or use lighting when appropriate.
