What to Know About Hit-and-Run Crashes
A hit-and-run occurs when a driver leaves after a traffic collision without stopping to provide required information or assistance. These cases can be especially difficult to investigate when the driver or vehicle is not immediately identified.
Investigators may rely on witness accounts, nearby surveillance cameras, vehicle descriptions, and physical evidence to establish what happened. People who witnessed a hit-and-run can help by providing accurate details about the vehicle, driver, direction of travel, and time of the collision.
Anyone involved in or witnessing a roadway collision should remain in a safe place and assist when appropriate. Drivers are generally required to stop and remain at the site after a collision, subject to applicable law.
