Why Pedestrian Crashes on Major Roads Can Be Severe
Pedestrian crashes along busy multi-lane roads often result in serious or fatal injuries because vehicles may be traveling at higher speeds, and drivers have less time to stop. Areas near hotels, intersections, and commercial properties can also create added risks when people attempt to cross traffic outside marked crosswalks.
Investigators reviewing these crashes commonly examine lighting conditions, traffic flow, roadway design, and visibility at the time of the collision. Nighttime conditions can make pedestrians harder to see, especially on roads with limited street lighting or heavy traffic movement. Road closures are often necessary after these crashes so crews can gather evidence, document vehicle positions, and safely clear the roadway.
