Nighttime Roads Can Make Pedestrians Harder to See
Pedestrian accidents at night can become severe because visibility changes quickly after dark. Drivers may have trouble spotting someone near the road when headlights, shadows, streetlights, and moving traffic all compete for attention.
People walking near busy urban roads may also be harder to notice when vehicles are turning, slowing, or changing lanes. Dark clothing, glare from other cars, and nearby parked vehicles can further reduce the time a driver has to react.
A person on foot has no physical protection when struck by a vehicle. Even brief contact can cause serious or fatal harm. After a nighttime pedestrian crash, reviews usually focus on lighting, roadway design, traffic direction, vehicle speed, and where the pedestrian was before the collision.
