What Drivers and Pedestrians Should Know About Disabled Vehicle Safety in Texas
Standing outside a disabled vehicle on a Texas highway is one of the most dangerous positions a person can be in. At highway speeds, passing drivers may have only a second or two to notice someone in or near a travel lane, particularly at night when visibility is reduced. Moving away from the vehicle and as far off the roadway as possible is widely recommended while waiting for help.
Texas law requires drivers to move over or slow down when passing stopped vehicles on the side of a road, including those that are disabled. However, this protection is most effective when the person outside the vehicle remains clear of active lanes. A person who steps into traffic, even briefly, removes the buffer that roadside positioning is meant to provide.
Disabled vehicles on rural highways like State Highway 205 present added risk because traffic may be moving at higher speeds with less lighting than in urban areas. These conditions make early detection of a stopped vehicle or a person on foot significantly harder for approaching drivers.
