Hillsborough County, FL (June 22, 2026) – A 27-year-old man died after being struck by an unmarked sheriff’s office vehicle on Saturday night on West Hillsborough Ave near Ambassador Dr in Hillsborough County.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the collision occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. on June 20. Investigators reported that Deputy Jonathan Kennon, 35, was driving an unmarked 2024 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on West Hillsborough Ave when the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as 27-year-old Dudane Anderson III. Deputies said Kennon immediately stopped following the collision and rendered aid until emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene. Anderson was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday afternoon.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office stated that Deputy Kennon has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation. The Florida Highway Patrol has assumed responsibility for investigating the fatal crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Dudane Anderson III during this difficult time.

Why Do Fatal Pedestrian Crashes Undergo Independent Investigation?

Fatal crashes involving government or law enforcement vehicles are investigated by an independent agency to ensure a thorough and impartial review of the incident. Investigators typically examine vehicle speed, driver actions, roadway conditions, visibility, and witness statements when reconstructing the events leading up to the collision.

Pedestrian crashes can occur in areas where individuals attempt to cross roadways outside designated crosswalks, particularly at night when visibility may be reduced. These incidents require extensive analysis to determine the circumstances that contributed to the crash.

Evidence gathered during the investigation may include vehicle data, scene measurements, surveillance footage, and witness accounts. Authorities will use this information to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any additional factors played a role in the fatal collision.
