Why Pedestrian Crashes at Night Can Be Difficult to Avoid
Pedestrian crashes that happen late at night can be harder for drivers and people on foot to avoid. Reduced lighting may limit visibility, especially on larger roads with multiple lanes or higher speed limits. Dark clothing, weather conditions, and roadway design can also affect how quickly a person crossing the street is seen.
In many cases, investigators review lighting conditions, traffic flow, and where the pedestrian was crossing at the time. Vehicle speed, braking distance, and witness statements may also help explain how the wreck unfolded. Roads with commercial traffic or limited sidewalks can present added risks after dark. Even with headlights, drivers may have only a short amount of time to react when someone enters the roadway unexpectedly.
