Why Pedestrian Crashes on Busy Suburban Roads Can Be So Severe
Pedestrian crashes on major suburban roadways involve higher traffic speeds and multiple lanes, which can reduce the amount of time a driver has to react. Even in well-lit areas, visibility challenges and traffic congestion can make it difficult to detect someone crossing the road.
Busy corridors like Hempstead Turnpike also include frequent turning movements and driveway access points, which can increase conflict points between vehicles and pedestrians. In many cases, crashes occur during evening hours when lighting conditions are lower, and driver attention may be divided.
After these types of incidents, investigators typically review roadway design, traffic flow, and witness accounts to better understand how the collision occurred.
