How Evidence Helps Investigators Solve Hit-and-Run Collisions
Hit-and-run investigations often rely on physical evidence left behind on the roadway. Broken headlights, vehicle trim, mirrors, and paint fragments can help identify the vehicle’s make, model, or year. These pieces may be matched to specific vehicles during the investigation.
Witness descriptions and nearby surveillance footage can also provide valuable leads. Investigators may review traffic cameras, security systems from nearby businesses, and video from residential properties to track the vehicle’s direction of travel. When these sources are combined with physical evidence, they can help narrow the search and establish what happened before and after the collision. In many cases, new information becomes available as additional evidence is examined.
