Frequently Asked Questions
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop and increase the force of impact, which raises the risk of serious injury or death. Even modest reductions in speed can significantly improve a pedestrian's odds in a collision.
Where do most pedestrian accidents happen?
Many pedestrian crashes occur at or near intersections, where vehicle and foot traffic cross paths. Crosswalks help, but drivers turning or failing to yield remain common factors.
Are pedestrian accidents more common at night?
Reduced visibility after dark does raise risk, but a meaningful share of pedestrian crashes also happen during daylight hours at busy intersections, as this one did.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in South Los Angeles, CA
Anyone involved in or witnessing a pedestrian collision in South Los Angeles should prioritize safety first, moving out of traffic if it's safe to do so and calling for emergency help. Even if injuries seem minor at first, a prompt medical exam can catch issues like soft tissue damage or head trauma that aren't immediately apparent. It's also worth asking responding officers how to obtain a copy of the official report once it's completed, since that document often matters later for insurance or medical purposes. Taking photos of the scene, if able, and noting any details about traffic signals or conditions can help clarify what happened.
