Peoria, AZ (May 4, 2026) – Nine people were injured after a crash involving a side-by-side UTV and a pickup truck north of Lake Pleasant in Peoria. The crash happened around 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, at Castle Hot Springs Road and Cow Creek Road. Emergency units responded to the scene and requested helicopters to transport several patients to nearby hospitals.
The UTV carried seven people, including a teen driver, two adults, and several teens between 16 and 18 years old. Officials said some occupants were not properly seated at the time of the crash. The pickup truck had two adult occupants.
Authorities reported that four people were taken to hospitals in critical condition. Three others suffered serious injuries, while two were treated for minor injuries. Early findings suggest the UTV was traveling northbound and the truck southbound when they collided head-on. Reduced visibility from dust in the area may have played a part.
The incident remains under review by authorities.
We are thinking of those injured as they receive medical care.
How Visibility and Seating Safety Affect UTV Crashes
Crashes involving UTVs can become more severe when visibility is limited. Dust, dirt, and loose terrain can reduce how far drivers can see ahead, especially on rural roads. When drivers cannot clearly spot oncoming traffic, the risk of head-on collisions increases.
Seating position also affects safety in these vehicles. UTVs are designed with specific seating areas and restraints to help protect occupants. When riders are not seated properly, they may be more exposed during sudden stops or impacts.
Passenger count and vehicle balance can also influence how a UTV handles. Overcrowding or uneven weight distribution may make it harder to control, especially on unpaved roads or at higher speeds.
