Pedestrian Safety on Roadways
Pedestrians face significant risks when walking along or crossing roadways, particularly after dark. Limited visibility can make it harder for drivers to see someone in or near a travel lane, while pedestrians may have difficulty judging the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.
Drivers should remain alert for people walking near roadways and reduce speed when visibility is limited. Pedestrians can improve their visibility by using designated crossings when available and wearing reflective or light-colored clothing at night. Staying aware of surrounding traffic can also reduce the risk of a serious collision.
