What Investigators Commonly Review After Residential Fires
After a fatal house fire, investigators begin by examining where the flames started and how quickly they spread through the residence. Burn patterns, electrical systems, heating equipment, and nearby materials may all be reviewed during the examination process.
Smoke movement and ventilation inside a home can also affect how rapidly conditions become dangerous for anyone inside. In many residential fires, investigators look at whether working smoke alarms were present and how the structure’s layout may have influenced escape routes.
Weather conditions and the age of the home may also provide helpful context during the investigation. Fire damage can sometimes make it difficult to immediately determine the exact cause, especially when large portions of a structure have collapsed or sustained extensive heat exposure.
