Why Pedestrians Face Increased Risks on High-Speed Highways
Pedestrian-related crashes on major highways usually result in serious harm because of the speeds at which vehicles travel. Unlike city streets, interstate routes are not designed for pedestrian activity, making any situation involving a person outside a vehicle especially dangerous.
People may find themselves on a highway after a mechanical problem, a tire issue, or another roadside emergency. In these circumstances, visibility can become a concern, particularly during evening hours or periods of heavy traffic. Drivers may have limited time to recognize and react to someone standing near travel lanes or shoulders.
Several factors are commonly reviewed after a pedestrian-related roadway accident, including traffic flow, lighting conditions, vehicle positioning, and the actions of everyone involved. Information gathered from these elements can help create a clearer picture of how the sequence of events unfolded and why the person was exposed to traffic.
