What Information Is Often Collected in a Hit-and-Run Investigation?
When a hit-and-run is reported, investigators typically begin by gathering descriptions of the vehicle involved, including its color, make, model, and any distinguishing features. Witness statements can also provide valuable details about the direction of travel and what occurred immediately before and after the contact.
Physical evidence may include roadway markings, vehicle debris, surveillance footage, and photographs from nearby businesses or traffic cameras. Medical records can help document the extent of injuries when someone is struck by a vehicle. Investigators may also review cell phone videos or dashboard camera footage if available. In many cases, early reports contain only limited facts, and additional details emerge as more evidence is collected and reviewed.
