What Often Happens During Multi-Vehicle Crashes at Urban Intersections
Crashes involving three or more vehicles often happen at busy city intersections where several traffic movements occur at the same time. Cars may be turning, stopping at signals, or moving through the crossing, which can create complex crash situations when one vehicle impacts another.
In many cases, the first collision sets off a chain reaction. A vehicle that is struck may slide forward or sideways and hit another nearby car. This type of sequence can increase the number of people involved and expand the area of damage across the intersection.
Traffic congestion and closely spaced vehicles can also make it harder for drivers to avoid a collision once the first impact occurs. Because several vehicles may be affected, emergency responders often work to assess multiple occupants and clear debris from the roadway before traffic returns to normal.
