Portland, OR (April 25, 2026) – A serious crash involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle shut down northbound Interstate 5 Sunday morning, April 25, in South Portland.
The collision occurred near milepost 298, just south of the Marquam Bridge and close to the Macadam Avenue exit. Emergency responders, including Portland Police and medical personnel, arrived at the scene to find a heavily impacted motorcycle and vehicle.
One person sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Authorities have not released additional details about the individuals involved.
Due to the severity of the crash, all northbound lanes of I-5 were closed for several hours while the Major Crash Team conducted an investigation. Traffic was diverted onto Macadam Avenue (Highway 43), causing significant delays throughout the area. By late morning, officials were able to reopen the far-left lane, though congestion remained.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Our thoughts are with the injured individual as they recover.
How Motorcycle Crashes on Highways Lead to Severe Injuries
Motorcycle crashes on highways often result in severe injuries due to high speeds and the lack of physical protection for riders. Even with protective gear, the force of impact in a collision can lead to critical trauma.
Highways like I-5 involve fast-moving traffic and frequent lane changes, which can increase the risk of collisions between motorcycles and larger vehicles. Limited visibility and blind spots may also contribute to these incidents.
When major crashes occur, extended lane closures are often necessary to allow for emergency response and detailed investigations. Increased awareness, safe lane changes, and maintaining proper distance can help reduce the likelihood of these serious accidents.
