Why Pedestrian Crashes Often Occur on Busy Urban Roads
Pedestrian crashes frequently happen on wide urban roads where traffic moves at moderate or high speeds. These roads often have multiple lanes, which can make crossing more difficult for people on foot.
When a pedestrian attempts to cross outside of marked crosswalks or against traffic signals, drivers may not expect someone in the roadway. This can reduce the time available for a driver to react and slow down.
Visibility also plays a role in many pedestrian incidents. Parked cars, roadside businesses, and traffic moving in several lanes can limit how quickly a driver sees someone entering the roadway.
Road width and traffic volume can add to the challenge. Crossing several lanes takes more time, and gaps in traffic may be brief. Because of these conditions, sudden crossings can increase the risk of a serious crash.
