Rockcastle County, KY (June 25, 2026) – One person died after a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday morning, June 23, on Highway 421 near Big Hill in Rockcastle County. The crash happened just before 5:00 a.m.
Deputies said 25-year-old Kevin Wilson of McKee was driving a 2003 Chevrolet pickup. A 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 45-year-old Matthew Gabbard, also of McKee, was also involved.
Investigators said the pickup crossed into the Tahoe’s path and the two vehicles collided. Gabbard was taken to CHI Saint Joseph Hospital in Berea. The Madison County coroner later pronounced Gabbard dead at the hospital.
The crash remains under review as accident reconstruction continues. We extend our sincere condolences to Gabbard’s family and loved ones.
Why Early Morning Rural Highway Crashes Can Be Severe
Early morning crashes on rural highways can be dangerous because visibility may be limited. Drivers may face dark roads, curves, hills, or fewer streetlights, which can make it harder to see another vehicle in time.
Two-vehicle crashes on highways can also cause serious harm when vehicles meet head-on. The force can damage both vehicles heavily and leave little time for drivers to react.
After a fatal roadway accident, investigators may review tire marks, vehicle damage, lane position, and final stopping points. Reconstruction work can take time because each detail helps explain the sequence leading up to the collision.
