San Jose, CA (September 2, 2026) – A black Toyota pickup truck and a blue Toyota Prius were involved in a collision on northbound Interstate 880 near the Bascom Avenue off-ramp on Monday, August 31. The first report came in at about 1:11 p.m., when the vehicles were blocking the fast lane.

Initial information indicated that two men could be heard asking each other whether they were okay. Medical assistance was requested shortly afterward. The Prius was later reported with major front-end damage, though the extent of any injuries was not confirmed.

The vehicles initially blocked the first lane, and the blockage later extended across the first and second lanes. A tow was requested for the damaged Prius. All lanes had reopened by about 1:43 p.m.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under review. We hope anyone hurt has a swift and full recovery.

Lane-Blocking Freeway Crashes Can Create Added Traffic Risks

A crash that blocks one or more freeway lanes can quickly disrupt traffic flow. Drivers approaching at highway speeds may have little time to recognize stopped vehicles and move into an open lane.

Sudden merging can create additional hazards, especially when traffic is heavy. Vehicles may slow sharply, while others enter neighboring lanes to avoid an obstruction. These movements can increase the chance of abrupt braking and close following distances.

Front-end damage can also leave a vehicle unable to move without towing assistance. Until disabled vehicles are cleared, lane capacity may remain reduced, and congestion can spread well beyond the original blockage. The duration of a slowdown often depends on traffic volume, available shoulder space, and how quickly travel lanes can be safely reopened.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
