Poland, ME (February 19, 2026) – A second person has died following a head-on crash that occurred on February 10 in the 300 block of Plains Rd in Poland. Authorities confirmed that 36-year-old Brittaney Rogers of Raymond succumbed to her injuries on February 16.
The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. when a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 26-year-old Dylan Sanphy of Gorham, attempted to pass another vehicle while traveling eastbound. Investigators said the Jeep entered the westbound lane and collided head-on with a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 driven by 52-year-old Edward Morris of Mechanic Falls, who was towing an enclosed snowmobile trailer.
Sanphy was pronounced dead at the scene. Two adult female passengers in the Jeep, including Rogers, were seriously injured and transported to Central Maine Medical Center. Authorities confirmed that Rogers later died from her injuries.
Morris was evaluated at the scene and did not require hospitalization. Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage and were considered totaled.
A crash reconstructionist assisted at the scene, and investigators continue to seek information from the occupant or occupants of a Subaru that was reportedly being passed by the Jeep and did not remain at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of Brittaney Rogers and Dylan Sanphy.
Why Passing Maneuvers Can Lead to Severe Head-On Collisions
Head-on crashes often occur when a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic during a passing attempt. On two-lane roads like Plains Rd, drivers must carefully judge distance, speed, and visibility before moving into the opposite lane. Even a brief miscalculation can result in a devastating collision.
When a vehicle is towing a trailer, as in this case, the size and weight can increase the force of impact. Investigators reviewing these crashes typically examine road markings, sight distance, and vehicle positioning to determine how the collision unfolded.
Head-on impacts frequently cause severe injuries due to the combined speed of both vehicles. These incidents highlight the risks associated with passing in areas where visibility or timing may be limited.
