Why Are Failure-to-Yield Crashes at Rural Intersections Especially Dangerous?
Rural intersections, especially those involving highways, can be particularly hazardous when drivers fail to yield. Vehicles traveling on highways often move at higher speeds, leaving little time for drivers entering from side roads to safely merge or cross.
When a driver ignores or misjudges a stop sign, the resulting collision is often severe due to the force of impact. These crashes commonly occur at angles, which can increase the likelihood of serious or life-threatening injuries.
Limited visibility, unfamiliar roads, and miscalculations in speed or distance can all contribute to these incidents. Drivers approaching intersections should come to a complete stop, carefully check for oncoming traffic, and only proceed when it is clearly safe to do so.
