Port Huron Township, MI (February 21, 2026) – A 51-year-old man from Detroit died after being struck by a vehicle and found unresponsive in a roadside ditch along Michigan Rd in Port Huron Township on February 20. The crash occurred just after 12:00 p.m. near the area north of Dove Rd, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the man was walking along Michigan Rd when a vehicle struck him, knocking him into a water-filled ditch. Emergency personnel from the Port Huron Township Fire Department and Tri-Hospital EMS found the man face down and unresponsive. Life-saving measures were performed at the scene, and he was transported to Lake Huron Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

The vehicle believed to be involved, a 2008 Jeep Liberty, initially fled the scene but returned a short time later. The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Marine City, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

Drug and alcohol test results are pending. The incident is being investigated by the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

What Investigators Look for in Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Fatalities

When a pedestrian is struck, and the driver initially leaves the scene, investigators follow a series of steps to determine intent, impact location, and contributing factors. Even when the driver later returns, as in this case, law enforcement must confirm the sequence of events.

Crash teams examine vehicle damage, skid marks, and witness accounts to reconstruct what happened. In rural or less-developed areas like Michigan Rd, roadside ditches and limited visibility may further complicate outcomes and rescue efforts.

Young or inexperienced drivers can face added challenges when reacting to sudden hazards. Authorities often assess whether visibility, distraction, or inexperience may have played a role. These reviews aim to provide answers to grieving families and help guide prevention strategies moving forward.
