Frequently Asked Questions
What gear actually helps protect a motorcycle rider? A DOT-approved helmet, a sturdy jacket and pants, gloves, and over-the-ankle boots all help absorb impact and reduce road rash and head injuries, though they can't prevent every injury in a serious collision.
What usually causes motorcycle crashes like this one? Left-turning vehicles at intersections are a frequent cause, along with drivers misjudging a motorcycle's speed or simply not seeing it in traffic.
Why do motorcycle crashes tend to cause more serious injuries than car crashes? Riders have no frame, airbags, or seatbelt to absorb a crash, so the force of impact passes directly to the rider, usually resulting in more severe injuries than in a comparable car crash.
How does a left-turning car end up colliding with an oncoming motorcycle? A driver turning left across traffic may misjudge how close or fast an oncoming motorcycle is, or not see it at all, and turn directly into its path, which is what FHP says occurred in this case.
What to Do After a Motorcycle Crash in Port Orange, FL
Anyone involved in a motorcycle crash should get checked by a medical professional even if injuries seem minor at first, since adrenaline can mask pain from fractures or internal injuries. It's important to get a copy of the official crash report once it's available and to document the scene, vehicle damage, and any visible injuries with photos if possible. Riders and families dealing with a serious crash should also keep records of medical visits and any time missed from work, since these details matter later. For those grieving a loss in Port Orange, reaching out to local support services or a counselor can help in the days following a crash like this.
