Frequently Asked Questions
How can drivers lower the chances of hitting someone on foot or on a scooter?
Slowing down near intersections and driveways, scanning both sides of the road before proceeding, and staying off the phone while driving all give drivers more time to spot someone crossing, especially in heavy traffic or low light.
What injuries commonly result from being hit by a vehicle while walking or riding a scooter?
Broken bones, head injuries, and internal injuries are common, since a pedestrian or scooter rider has little protection against a vehicle's impact. Severity usually depends on the vehicle's speed and where the person is struck.
What usually causes these kinds of crashes?
Distracted or inattentive driving, failing to yield at crossings, and pedestrians or riders entering roadways outside marked crosswalks are common factors, especially during busy commute hours.
Does a vehicle's speed change a pedestrian's odds of survival?
Yes. Research consistently shows that the faster a vehicle is moving at impact, the lower a pedestrian's chance of surviving or avoiding serious injury, which is why speed limits in high-pedestrian areas matter.
What to Do After a Pedestrian Accident in Port Wentworth, GA
Anyone involved in a pedestrian crash should get a medical evaluation as soon as possible, even if injuries seem minor at first. Some injuries, especially head trauma or internal bleeding, aren't obvious right away. It's also important to get the names and badge numbers of responding officers and ask how to obtain the official crash report once it's filed. If you witnessed the crash or were nearby, write down what you saw while the details are fresh. Photos of the scene, the vehicles involved, and any visible injuries can help later if questions arise about how the crash happened. Finally, follow up with your doctor in the days after the crash to make sure any delayed symptoms are caught and documented.
