Why Early Morning Hours Can Increase Pedestrian Crash Risks
Pedestrian crashes often occur during low-light hours, especially in the early morning before sunrise. Reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing or walking along the roadway. Street lighting, weather conditions, and vehicle speed can also affect how quickly a driver notices a person nearby.
Busy corridors with multiple lanes or limited crossing areas may add additional risk. In some locations, pedestrians may need to cross wide roadways where traffic moves at higher speeds. When visibility is limited, both drivers and pedestrians may have less time to react.
Factors such as road design, lighting conditions, and driver awareness are commonly reviewed when examining pedestrian safety patterns. Public awareness efforts and roadway improvements are sometimes used in cities to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.
