Frequently Asked Questions
Why do semi-trucks need so much distance to stop?
A loaded semi can weigh tens of thousands of pounds more than a car, and that extra weight means its brakes need far more distance and time to bring it to a stop, especially at highway speeds or in wet conditions.
What makes crashes between trucks and cars more dangerous than typical car crashes?
The difference in size and weight means the car and its occupants absorb most of the force in a collision. Even a low-speed impact can cause serious injury to the occupants of the smaller vehicle.
What are a truck's blind spots, and why do they matter?
Semi-trucks have large blind spots along both sides, behind the trailer, and directly in front of the cab. A car that lingers in one of these zones may be invisible to the truck driver, contributing to lane-change and merging crashes.
What is an underride crash?
An underride crash happens when a smaller vehicle slides partly or fully beneath a truck's trailer during a collision, often because the trailer sits higher than the car's safety structure. These crashes tend to cause more severe injuries than typical rear-end collisions.
What to Do After a Truck Crash in Portland, OR
If you're involved in a crash with a commercial truck, call 911 right away and stay as safe as possible until help arrives. Even if you feel fine, get checked by a medical professional, since injuries from a collision with a large vehicle aren't always obvious right away. Take photos of the scene if you're able, note the truck company and any identifying markings, and get the names of witnesses. Keep a copy of the police or fire department report once it's available, and hold on to any medical records related to the crash. Giving yourself time to recover, physically and otherwise, matters just as much as handling the paperwork.
