POMONA, Los Angeles County, Calif., Oct. 27, 2026 — A crash involving multiple vehicles blocked lanes on westbound State Route 60 near State Route 71 early on Monday morning, October 26. The wreck shut down the carpool lane and the number one lane and prompted a temporary SigAlert.

The California Highway Patrol said as many as four vehicles were involved, including a white sedan, a red Jeep Cherokee and at least one SUV, though the exact count of vehicles reportedly varied in early radio traffic. Debris was reported in the roadway and at least one vehicle was described as not drivable.

An ambulance was requested for one party involved after an initial report described possible whiplash, and medics were sent to the scene as a precaution, the agency said. The extent of the injuries has not been confirmed so far. Los Angeles County Fire Department units also responded.

CHP issued a SigAlert for the HOV and number one lanes that was expected to last about 30 minutes, though the closure extended into the early morning hours before all lanes reopened around 6:07 a.m. Multiple tow companies were called to clear the vehicles, and officials said negative visibility conditions on scene required extra signage for passing traffic. The CHP Freeway Service Patrol was also dispatched and later closed out its portion of the response.

The cause of the crash has not been released and remains under investigation.

We are hoping for the best for everyone involved and their families.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does fog or low visibility affect multi-vehicle crashes like this one?

Reduced visibility, whether from fog, darkness, or glare, cuts down the time drivers have to react to slowing or stopped traffic ahead, which can turn a single crash into a chain-reaction pileup involving several vehicles.

Why does following distance matter so much in highway crashes?

Leaving more space between vehicles gives a driver time to brake safely if traffic ahead slows suddenly. Tailgating is a common factor in rear-end and multi-vehicle collisions on freeways.

Are secondary crashes common after an initial wreck blocks a lane?

Yes. When a crash blocks part of a freeway, approaching traffic that doesn't slow in time can strike stopped cars or emergency vehicles, which is why agencies usually close additional lanes and issue alerts like a SigAlert while a scene is cleared.

Why are multi-vehicle crashes usually harder to investigate than single-car wrecks?

With several vehicles and drivers involved, investigators have to piece together the sequence of impacts, determine which vehicle struck which, and account for conflicting witness accounts, which can take longer than a straightforward two-car crash.
