POWHATAN, Powhatan County, Va., Nov. 2, 2026 — A 15-year-old girl has died following a single-vehicle crash on Friday night, October 30, on Cosby Road near Three Bridge Road in Powhatan County, according to Virginia State Police. The crash had earlier left two people hospitalized.
Troopers said the crash happened around 8:12 p.m. A 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer reportedly ran off the right side of the road and struck trees before overturning and hitting another tree.
The girl, a passenger in the car, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters before being taken to Westchester Emergency Center, where she later died from her injuries. A second occupant was also taken to a hospital by ambulance. The extent of that person's injuries has not been released.
State police said the girl was wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. The crash remains under investigation by Virginia State Police.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do fatal-crash investigations usually take?
Investigations can take several weeks to months, depending on how long it takes to analyze the vehicle, the scene, and any available data before a final report is issued.
Does wearing a seat belt prevent all serious injury in a rollover?
A seat belt lowers the risk of being thrown from a vehicle or thrown against the interior during a rollover, but it does not eliminate the risk of serious or fatal injury, especially when a vehicle strikes solid objects like trees.
What should I do if I'm involved in a single-vehicle crash?
Call 911 right away, stay as still as possible if you may be injured, and wait for emergency crews. Do not attempt to move a trapped passenger unless there is immediate danger, such as fire.
