Prince Frederick, MD (April 8, 2026) – A 54-year-old woman died, and two others were injured in a crash on Solomons Island Road (MD Route 2) on Tuesday morning in Anne Arundel County.
The collision occurred around 7:20 a.m. on April 7, just south of Polling House Road. Police said a 19-year-old driving a Dodge Challenger was traveling north when the car struck the rear of a Nissan Xterra. The impact pushed the Xterra into the southbound lane, where it collided head-on with a Toyota.
The driver of the Nissan, Regina Ann Hicks of Prince Frederick, was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The drivers of the other vehicles were also hospitalized and treated for minor injuries.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available.
We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.
How Rear-End and Secondary Collisions Can Lead to Fatal Injuries
Crashes that begin with a rear-end impact can quickly escalate if vehicles are pushed into opposing lanes. These secondary collisions often involve higher speeds and direct head-on contact, increasing the risk of serious injuries or fatalities.
Vehicle size, speed, and impact angle all influence the outcome. Larger or heavier vehicles can cause more force when striking smaller cars, while head-on collisions tend to concentrate energy on the front occupants.
Traffic conditions, visibility, and reaction time also play a role. Even short delays in braking or in taking evasive action can trigger a chain of collisions, particularly during the morning rush hour when roads are busy.
