Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrian crashes commonly happen when a driver fails to see someone crossing, especially at intersections, or when a pedestrian enters a roadway outside a crosswalk. Poor lighting and driver distraction are also frequent factors.
How does a vehicle's speed affect a pedestrian's chances of survival?
Survival rates drop sharply as speed increases. A pedestrian struck at lower speeds is far more likely to survive than one hit at higher speeds, since the force of impact grows with velocity.
Where do most pedestrian accidents occur?
Many pedestrian crashes happen at or near intersections, where vehicle and foot traffic cross paths. Roads without sidewalks or marked crosswalks also see frequent incidents.
Are pedestrian accidents more likely to happen at night?
Reduced visibility after dark raises the risk for pedestrians, since drivers have less time to spot someone in the roadway. Evening and nighttime hours see a higher share of fatal pedestrian crashes than daytime hours.
