Readington, NJ (April 22, 2026) – A two-car crash on Route 22 at the intersection of Main Street in Readington on Tuesday, April 21, left two drivers hurt, one with serious injuries requiring helicopter transport. Emergency units responded to the scene at around 4:26 p.m.

A 2025 Honda Accord driven by a 29-year-old woman from Pittstown and a 2021 Infiniti QX50 driven by a 58-year-old woman from Bayville were involved in the collision. Both drivers were injured in the crash.

The driver of the Infiniti suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to an area trauma center. The driver of the Honda was taken by ground to a local hospital for treatment.

The incident remains under review by authorities, and more details will be released as they become available.

We are thinking of both drivers as they receive medical care.

What Makes Route 22 Intersections in New Jersey Particularly Prone to Crashes?

Route 22 is one of New Jersey’s busiest surface highways, running through a mix of commercial corridors, intersections, and access roads that generate a high volume of turning and merging traffic. Where state routes meet county roads at grade level — without full interchange separation — the potential for conflicting movements between vehicles increases significantly. Drivers must often make quick judgments about gaps in fast-moving traffic, which raises the risk of a collision.

Crashes at these intersections can be especially severe because the speeds involved are often higher than those on local streets. When two vehicles of different sizes collide at an angle, the occupants of both can face serious injury, even with modern safety features. New Jersey has a long history of working to improve safety on Route 22, though high-traffic corridors remain challenging to fully redesign.
