Las Vegas, NV (August 1, 2026) – A rear passenger died on Friday morning after a vehicle struck a parked tractor-trailer on S Highland Dr near Edna Ave. The collision happened around 9:10 a.m.

The police said a 2026 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound when it approached a parked 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer in the northbound lanes. Investigators said the Nissan did not slow down or move around the parked truck before striking the trailer.

The Nissan driver and front passenger were taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries. An occupant inside the Volvo’s sleeping cab was not hurt. The rear passenger was pronounced dead after emergency units provided life-saving efforts.

Detectives said evidence, witness statements, and surveillance video were reviewed during the investigation; the Nissan driver remained at the site and was arrested after they determined he was impaired. The review into the deadly wreck continues as more details are gathered.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the person who died.

How Parked Commercial Trucks Can Create Roadway Risks

Large trucks parked along streets or shoulders can create challenges for approaching drivers, especially in areas with limited visibility. Drivers must remain alert for stopped vehicles and adjust their speed based on traffic conditions.

A serious accident involving a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck can involve several factors, including vehicle speed, driver attention, lighting, and roadway design. Safety experts usually encourage drivers to maintain a safe distance, avoid distractions, and watch for large vehicles that may be difficult to see at night or in busy traffic areas. Careful driving habits can help reduce the chances of dangerous situations involving stopped or parked trucks.
