Risks of Riding ATVs on Public Roads
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are designed for off-road use and can be extremely vulnerable when operated on public streets. Unlike cars, ATVs offer little protection in collisions, leaving riders exposed to serious injury or death.
Wearing helmets and protective gear is crucial, as head injuries are common in ATV crashes. Visibility and speed control are also important, since drivers of other vehicles may not expect an ATV in the roadway.
Even when alcohol or speed is not a factor, stopping on or near traffic lanes can be dangerous. Proper safety measures, including avoiding roads and using designated trails, can reduce the risk of fatal crashes involving ATVs.
