Henrico Co., VA (June 22, 2026) – A 26-year-old motorcyclist lost his life Saturday night, June 20, after a crash in eastern Henrico County. The accident happened around 9:35 p.m. at North Airport Drive and Airport Place, near Highland Springs High School.
The police identified the motorcycle rider as Hunter Southard of Henrico. When officers arrived, they found Southard in the road with clear signs of trauma, and he was pronounced dead there.
Preliminary details indicated the motorcycle was traveling north on North Airport Drive while a sedan was heading south and turning left onto Airport Place. The two vehicles were then involved in a collision at the intersection.
The sedan driver stayed at the site and is cooperating with investigators. Officials said they do not believe speed or alcohol were factors for the sedan driver. Still, the cause remains under review as investigators continue examining the moments before the wreck.
We extend our sincere condolences to Southard’s family and friends.
Why Motorcycle Crashes at Intersections Can Be Severe
Motorcycle crashes at intersections can be dangerous because riders have less protection than people inside cars. A turn across traffic can leave both drivers with only a short time to react, especially at night.
Visibility is usually a major concern in these roadway accidents. Motorcycles are smaller than cars and may be harder to see near headlights, signs, or nearby traffic. Drivers may also misjudge how quickly a motorcycle is approaching.
After a serious intersection collision, investigators frequently review vehicle paths, turning movements, lighting, and driver statements. Damage patterns can also help show how the vehicles came together. These details may take time to confirm, especially when early reports focus mainly on the people involved and the basic timeline.
