What Drivers in Wyoming Need to Know About Stopped School Bus Laws
In Wyoming, drivers are required by law to stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing and its stop arm extended. This applies to traffic traveling in both directions on most roads, with limited exceptions for divided highways with a physical barrier. Failing to stop for a school bus is a serious traffic violation that can result in significant fines.
The moments when a bus is loading or unloading children are among the most dangerous for young passengers. Many school bus-related injuries happen outside the vehicle, not inside it, making the area immediately around a stopped bus a high-risk zone. Drivers approaching a stopped bus should reduce speed well in advance and stay alert for children near the roadway.
Rear-end crashes near stopped school buses often happen when following vehicles don’t slow down quickly enough. Rural highways like Hwy 789 in Fremont County can make it harder to spot a stopped bus until a driver is already close.
