What Are the Risks of Head-On Crashes on Two-Lane Roads in Maine?
Head-on collisions on two-lane roads are among the most serious types of crashes because both vehicles are typically moving toward each other at speed. When a driver crosses the center line, there is very little time for the other driver to react and avoid contact. Roads like Rte 302 in Cumberland County carry a steady mix of commuter and local traffic, making center-line departures especially dangerous during morning hours.
Factors that commonly lead to center-line crossings include distraction, fatigue, medical events, and loss of vehicle control on curves or slick pavement. Maine’s spring conditions can also leave road surfaces unpredictable in the early morning. Regardless of cause, the outcome of a head-on crash at highway speeds is often severe, particularly when one of the vehicles is a large bus.
