ROANOKE, Roanoke County, Va., Oct. 16, 2026 — A bicyclist was seriously injured on Wednesday evening, October 14, in a crash with an SUV at the intersection of Memorial Avenue and Wasena Avenue SW, according to Roanoke police. The crash shut down the intersection for several hours as officers carried out what police called a major crash investigation.

The collision happened at about 6 p.m. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital with injuries described as serious. The extent of those injuries has not been released.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene. No charges have been announced, and police have not said what led to the crash.

While the intersection was closed, Roanoke police directed drivers to use Brandon Avenue as an alternate route. Police said later Wednesday evening that the intersection had reopened.

The investigation is ongoing. Police have not released additional details about the bicyclist or the driver.

We wish the injured a complete and speedy recovery.

Who Faces the Greatest Risk When Bicycles and Vehicles Collide

Riders on two wheels carry almost none of the protection that comes standard in a car or SUV. There is no frame, no airbag, no seatbelt between a cyclist and the pavement or the vehicle that strikes them, so even a crash at modest speed can leave a rider with a serious injury while the driver walks away unhurt.

Certain groups appear more frequently in the injury data. Riders in urban corridors, commuters crossing busy intersections, and cyclists riding at dusk or after dark all face higher exposure because visibility and right-of-way conflicts tend to be more pronounced at those times and places. Older cyclists and children are also overrepresented in counts of serious injuries, in part because falls and impacts are harder on their bodies and because both groups may be less visible to drivers scanning for other cars rather than bikes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 49,989 pedalcyclists were injured in traffic crashes in 2023. That figure spans riders of every age and setting, from quiet residential streets to the kind of mixed-use intersections found in many mid-sized cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cyclists have the same rights on the road as drivers?

In Virginia and most states, bicyclists are generally treated as vehicle operators with the same rights and duties as drivers, including the right to a travel lane and the obligation to obey traffic signals.

Are intersections a common site for bicycle crashes?

Yes. Many bicycle-vehicle crashes occur at or near intersections, where turning vehicles, crossing traffic, and limited sightlines increase the likelihood that a driver and a rider fail to see each other in time.

What injuries are most common in these crashes?

Cyclists struck by vehicles often suffer broken bones, head and spinal injuries, and road rash from being thrown from the bike. Injury severity usually depends on speed, point of impact, and whether the rider was wearing a helmet.

What typically causes bicycle-vehicle collisions?

Common factors include drivers failing to yield when turning, limited visibility at dusk or night, distracted driving, and cyclists or drivers misjudging each other's speed at intersections.
